Data from a network of magnetovariation stations are used to investigate the By-dependent currents in the southern polar region for November 11-12, 1979 and January 8, 1980 when the IMF vertical component was northward. The method of Kotikov et al. (1986) is used to characterize the fine structure of the ionospheric currents. The results indicate that the By-dependent polar electrojets have a filament ray structure with currents flowing in opposite directions, suggesting that two more field-aligned current sheets should exist at latitudes between Region 1 and the NBZ currents at noon hours.
