Research and other activities in the Earth sciences would remain the same or decrease if the Bush administration's proposed federal budget for fiscal year 2005 is enacted, even though it would provide increases for research and development in some areas. The budget was announced on 2 February. One winner is the National Science Foundation. The budget for NSF's Geosciences Division would increase by 2.2% to $728.5 million. The foundation's overall proposed $5.745 billion budget represents a 3% increase above levels enacted by Congress for 2004, and a 30% boost since 2001.
