Observations of VLF-emissions on 8 kc/s close to the auroral zone at Tromsø during sharp and sudden dips of ionospheric absorption (recorded via a riometer on 28 Mc/s) and SC-like deflections in H have been analyzed. It is pointed out that the sharp dip of absorption very often is preceded by series of VLF-emissions, which disappear when the absorption dip develops, and it is pointed out also that the VLF-emissions start to decrease 1-2 min before the strong dip of absorption develops. It is shown, however, that the start of the VLF-emission seems to coincide with the SC-deflection in H and that the disappearance of VLF-burst during the absorption dip must be due to the increased ionospheric absorption of the VLF-waves. The displacement in time of the absorption dip relative to the VLF-emission spike may be interpreted as a delay time for the formation of the ionospheric absorption layer, and quantitative estimates support this point of view. It is noted that the corpuscular ionization process in the D-layer is switched off in time before the steady-state condition is attained, and that the intensity of the corpuscular bundle must be orders of magnitude higher than during smooth and gradual absorption events. The diurnal variations of the sudden absorption events, SCA, at Tromsø and Churchill are compared, at Churchill there is a maximum around 22 hr geomagnetic time, at Tromsø around 24 hr.
