The authors summarize their experimental results on the cross section for polymerization induced by fast protons (E ≈ 100 keV - 2 MeV) on substrates (T = 10 - 300K) surrounded by hydrocarbon atmospheres or covered with frozen hydrocarbon layers. On the basis of these results they show that this process, activated by solar cosmic rays, is capable of building up substantial carbonaceous material on Pluto and Triton, both of which are probably covered by methane frost and/or surrounded by methane-rich atmospheres.
