Results are reported for a laboratory investigation of the broadening and shifting of two Mg I and three Mg II spectral lines due to collisions with free electrons and van der Waals interaction with hydrogen atoms. The experimental apparatus consisted of a high-pressure arc operating in a hydrogen atmosphere between a magnesium anode and a tungsten cathode. Determinations are made of the radial temperature distribution in the arc, the number densities of magnesium atoms and ions, the electron density, and the density of perturbing hydrogen atoms. Broadening parameters for the van der Waals interaction and the electron impacts are obtained from the total line profiles by two different methods, and the experimental data are compared with theoretical estimates. The accuracy of all the different results is evaluated.
