The broad emission lines in the Seyfert 1 galaxies NGC 5548, Markarian 279 and Markarian 290 have been monitored for a period of two months, at intervals ranging from 3 to 15 days, during the summer of 1987. High resolution CCD spectra were taken in the H-alpha and H-beta regions. The spectra were internally calibrated to each other by normalizing the flux of the narrow lines: advantages and potential pitfalls of this method are discussed. The broad lines showed 10-15 percent variations on time scales of a week or less in all three sources. Shoulder variation is observed in NGC 5548. In all cases the variation occurs both at positive and negative velocities, indicating that the prevailing net motions are nonradial.
