We present a successful afterschool program that astronomers can adopt and implement within their local communities with minimal effort. Our program targets middle school students in out-of-school-time settings and introduces basic astronomy concepts through hands-on activities, with a focus on the Universe beyond the solar system. It provides an opportunity for astronomers to work within their communities to introduce students to topics which hold significant interest but are not typically studied in school.
The program is ideally run as a partnership between astronomers and local afterschool program providers - astronomers contribute the content expertise, and program leaders bring it to the audience. This program was successfully pilot tested with several hundred participants in 2006 and 2007 as the Beyond Einstein Explorers’ Program (BEEP). A comprehensive manual provides detailed recipes for running the program sessions, background information, materials lists, and extension activities and resources. Activity topics include the scale and structure of the Universe, the electromagnetic spectrum, spectroscopy, telescopes, stellar evolution, galaxies, black holes, and more.
A flexible structure allows the program to be run in a variety of settings, including astronomy days, summer camps, or year-long afterschool programming. Astronomers who are interested in deeper involvement can partner with us to run training sessions and also add new modules to the program.
