Since 1889, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) has been working to promote the public understanding of astronomy--most recently as a vehicle for advancing science literacy--through a variety of constituencies, including classroom teachers. Since the late 1970's, the Society has held national workshops, has created a wide range of classroom materials, and has organized, evaluated, and published collections of activities and resources for teachers and astronomers who work with them. The ASP is thus well positioned to support formal education initiatives during the International Year of Astronomy in 2009 and beyond. This presentation will review plans to employ the national Project ASTRO program, The Universe in the Classroom newsletter, and other in-school and after-school resources in service to IYA. It will also outline new ASP initiatives in teacher professional development and the Society's work with both national and international cornerstone IYA efforts to use the year as an opportunity to improve science teaching and learning in the classroom. The ASP has a long history of partnerships with other organizations and projects that share its goals, and welcomes opportunities for collaboration in reaching additional teachers and students with age-appropriate, standards-based, hands-on activities.
