Results are reported for a sounding-rocket observation of the brightness distribution of soft X-rays over a wide region of sky in the L band (0.15-0.3 keV) and the M band (0.5-0.8 keV). The M-band distribution is found to be quite different from that in the L band. Specifically, the distribution of the M-band/L-band flux ratio (M/L) reveals that the X-ray spectra are not the same over the scanned region, which is at variance with the assumption that M/L should be constant along a galactic longitude of about 150 deg. The observed dependence of the L-band flux and M/L on neutral hydrogen column density is partly accounted for in terms of absorption by low-velocity neutral hydrogen gas, especially in the northern H I hole. A contribution from hot plasma clouds existing beyond the cool absorbing clouds is indicated
