By means of an 8 bit CCD line scanner, high resolution images from photographic plates can be obtained and stored in TIFF format. We describe the device, the scanning process and the software for automatic determination of the brightness of star-like objects on a plate. We applied the method to photographic plates taken with the 40/200-Astrograph of Sonneberg Observatory. The accuracy attainable for stars with photographic magnitudes between 9m and 18m can be 0.04 mag on well-exposed plates.
