The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) is a global collaboration between nations and organisations for peaceful purposes - the search for our cosmic origin, a common heritage that connects everyone. The science of astronomy represents millennia of collaborations across all boundaries: geographic, gender, age, culture and race, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter. This report outlines the status of the principal projects and activities that make up the Year. This article will highlight some of the important planetary missions due to take place throughout 2009, as well as explaining methods of engaging the public with these events and highlighting the need for international cooperation.
