The instability that occurs when relativistic electrons in a plasma emit electromagnetic bremsstrahlung radiation is investigated. The case of isotropically distributed ultrarelativistic electrons is considered along with the radiative instability associated with the deceleration of fast anisotropic electrons (i.e., an electron beam) by plasma ions. Values are determined for the particle energy and radiation frequency at which the reabsorption coefficient becomes negative. It is shown that in strong magnetic fields the bremsstrahlung instability will occur for any arbitrary one-dimensional ultrarelativistic-electron distribution.
