The branching of PP chains is discussed, and it is noted that for a given ratio Y/X of helium and hydrogen abundances by mass that the branching to PP III increases continuously as the temperature increases. It is found that for a given temperature there is a critical Y/X for which the branching to PP III is maximum. For higher values, the branching to PP III is shown to decrease. The critical value of X has been calculated as a function of temperature. The impact of the existence of this maximum on the evolution of the solar neutrino counting rate is considered.
