Backscatter from quasi-periodic inhomogeneities in the electron density, generated by a powerful ionospherically reflected wave, has been observed at Arecibo. The backscatter was more intense by about 40 dB than that observed earlier by other workers at higher latitudes. It is suggested that the anomalous ionospheric absorption was greater in the earlier experiments.
