A search has been conducted for hydrogen Br-alpha (lambda = 4.05 microns) emission from several of the southern compact infrared sources associated with southern OH/H2O masers. The search had the objective to obtain more information regarding the nature of these sources and to identify those objects worthy of a study at higher spectral resolution. Br-alpha emission was detected in the case of seven of the 12 sources studied. This detection confirms the generally young evolutionary state of the involved objects. Fabry-Perot spectra of the Br-alpha line at a resolution of 45 km/s are presented for two sources, and 75 km/s resolution spectra are presented for two others. The detection of Br-alpha emission from W33A indicates that this object may be in an evolutionary state which is not too different from that of better-known objects such as BN.
