Boron results for sedimentary rocks from the British Carboniferous are reviewed and additional information presented for the Mansfield marine band in the Westphalian Coal Measures of Yorkshire, and its equivalent horizon in Durham, the Ryhope marine band. It is concluded from these results for shales, and clay fractions from other sediments, that most of the boron is contained by illite and that the boron content of illite was fixed during the weathering of the source rocks. Although the use of boron as a paleosalinity indicator is therefore precluded, it does give rise to the possibility of it being a reflection of conditions in the sediment's source area. The boron contents of Yoredale and Coal Measure sediments differ, and this possibly reflects a different degree of chemical weathering in the source area.
