Radiation scattering by molecules in the expanding universe at redshifts of z = 30 to 50 is considered. It is shown that the presence of a molecule such as H2D(+) can result in a 'curtain' effect that blurs the primary spatial fluctuations of the microwave background. The necessary abundances of this molecule are estimated, and features of the secondary fluctuations are discussed.
