The fundamental physics of black holes is reviewed, with a focus on the Hawking thermal radiation and the mechanisms responsible for it. A semiclassical approach viewing the radiation field as quantized and the gravitational field as nonquantized is taken. The metric of the Schwarzschild solution for the standard black hole is given in standard coordinates and used to characterize the trajectories of radial photons; a Newtonian analysis is employed to estimate the total power radiated by a black hole. A solar-mass black hole will have a temperature of about 10 to the -7th K and emit about 4 x 10 to the -28th J/sec.
