Venus: Radar Observations

Scientific paper

Results are presented of the investigation of two sections of the north polar region of Venus by the bistatic radar method at 32 cm wavelength. The spatial distributions of reflectivity and roughness are obtained with the sections investigated. These distributions are compared with radar images of the indicated sections that have been made by a side-looking survey method at 8-cm wavelength. Higher reflectivity and lower roughness values correspond to the darker regions on the radar images. The measured values of the reflection coefficient are, on an average, from 1.5 to 6 dB lower than the theoretical value, which indicates a possible absorption effect in the polar troposphere of Venus.
