Measured UV irradiation data is used in conjunction with a radiative transfer model to determine the seasonal variation in effective biological UV dose, total ozone abundance, and cloud optical depth at McMurdo Station, Antarctica from September 15, 1988 through April 15, 1989. It is noted that comparison of UV radiation levels in Austral spring 1988 and Austral fall 1989 reveals a definite asymmetry around the summer solstice. Also, evidence indicates that the biologically effective UV dose was enhanced by 20 percent in October, 1988 compared to March 1989. No discernible asymmetry is evidenced in the combined effect of surface albedo and cloud cover for the period of depressed ozone abundance. It is suggested that the spring over fall enhancement in UV radiation levels is brought about by corresponding depression in ozone abundance of 8 percent in the spring compared to the fall.
