It is projected that Hipparcos observations of position, motion, and parallax will lead to the discovery of several thousand new binary stars with separations of less than 0.3 arcsec. Due to limitations of the Hipparcos instrument, for systems with separations of between 10 and 45 arcsec, only the primary component will be measured. For these systems with large separations, the systematic measurement of the two parallaxes will aid in the confirmation of their binary character.
