We present the results of numerical calculations of the hydrodynamical evolution of close black hole-neutron star binaries during the final stages of inspiral. We discuss how the degree of tidal locking in the binary and the stiffness of the equation of state affect the outcome of the interaction between the black hole and the neutron star, and address the relevance of these results to models of gamma ray bursts.
