We investigate the capture of small-mass bodies by three-body encounters in the field of a massive binary system. Capture cross-sections are calculated analytically using a method adapted from the work of Radzievskii and Tomanov (1977). The high-velocity limit agrees with Heggie's (1975) analytical calculations. Results of recent numerical simulations by Valtonen and Innanen (1982) and Hills (1983) are used to extend the method to low approach velocities. The fraction of bodies impacting on to one of the binary components is estimated using a simple analytical procedure. As a first application, we discuss in a most general fashion the efficiency with which binary stars can capture comets. We then investigate the circumstances under which the impact of comets on a degenerate star member of a binary system can be enhanced as compared to the single star rate. This may be of relevance with respect to some of the observed gamma-ray bursts. Application of the results to the case of binary supermassive black holes is also briefly discussed.
