We present first sub-arcsecond (~0.5'') angular resolution 12CO(1-0) observations of the ISM in the host galaxy of the QSO I Zw 1. The observations were made with the BIMA mm array in its A configuration. The measurements are part of multi-wavelength studies for starburst models to allow a comparison of ISM properties of QSO host galaxies with nearby galaxies as well as to obtain constraints for galaxy formation/evolution models. The observations presented here are the first mm molecular line measurements of the host galaxy of a QSO with sub-kpc spatial resolution. The data confirm the presence of a molecular ring-like structure with about 1 kpc radius around the nucleus of the galaxy. The presence of such a molecular ring was indicated by lower resolution PdBI observations (Schinnerer et al., 1998, APJ, 500, 147). A first comparison of the BIMA data with new PdBI 12CO(2-1) observations with 0.9'' angular resolution shows variations in the excitation conditions of the molecular gas in the innermost 3'' comprising the nuclear region of I Zw 1.
