The detailed analysis of the patronage of sciences and arts in the eighteenth century, carried out by several authors, shows a great impact on scientific and artistic development at the time. This analysis highlights the role of royalty in supporting innovative thinking thus indirectly helping in laying down the foundations of modern science. Part of this analysis points to a stimulating strong interaction between the scientific developments of astronomy in Italy and the court of King D. João V in Portugal. Although not an intellectual, King D. João V became a consistent and committed patron of the sciences and the arts, beyond mere curiosity and inclination. His role of Maecenas has deserved little recognition.
