The Solar Neighborhood is a rich and diverse place that is becoming more and more crowded as the RECONS group and others flesh out the secrets hidden within. This is accomplished through proper motion and photometric surveys, literature reviews, and our parallax program carried out at CTIO. Our own SuperCOSMOS RECONS proper motion survey reveals new solar neighbors, called SCR stars, with proper motions ranging from 3.00 to 0.03 arcsec/year, while providing photographic plate BRI magnitudes of unprecedented quality that are used to make preliminary distance estimates.
One of our current goals is to collect accurate optical and infrared photometric data for the first 80 SCR discoveries estimated to be within 25 parsecs. VRI photometry acquired using the 0.9m telescope at CTIO is combined with JHK photometry from 2MASS to fine-tune the membership of the 25 pc sample via distance estimates accurate to 15%. In the process, we reveal intriguing details about the targets, including which stars are in multiple systems and which are variable stars.
The SCR sample has made the environs surrounding the Sun significantly more crowded, with hundreds of new objects identified to be red dwarfs or their less luminous subdwarf cousins, as well as a surprising number of white dwarfs. New astrometric data obtained will eventually yield masses of binary stars in our sample, and will provide valuable points on the stellar mass-luminosity relation. Our coordinated Neighborhood Watch reveals many previously unidentified characters lurking near the Sun that were not fingerprinted before ... many of which deserve closer monitoring.
