The paper presents an overview of the processes occurring in the interstellar medium, with emphasis on the effects of stellar evolution (the birth and death of stars) on the medium. Some of the topics touched upon include mass ejection by luminous stars, and supernovae, in the flash stage and in the stage of shell-expansion. Also studied are interstellar gas composition, interstellar magnetic field structure, and the physics of soft X rays and low-energy cosmic rays. Finally the subject of dark nebulae and star formation is treated.
