In the first part of the paper former investigations are reviewed, the method employed to convert the oxygen of silicate minerals and rocks into carbon monoxide is described and sketches of the apparatus used are given. The thermal reaction SiO 2 + 3 C = SiC + 2 CO is quantitative when the powdered silicate is mixed with graphite and heated in vacuum up to ±2000° C . The results are reliable if certain precautions, to which attention is drawn, are taken. The main part of the paper deals with the results obtained. It is shown, that during the thermal reaction fractionation of the oxygen isotopes might occur. Crystallisation from magma is also accompanied by a fractionation of the oxygen isotopes, the first crystalline phases being richer in the heavier isotope than the later. 70 minerals and rocks of magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary origin have been investigated. The results are discussed and summarised in Table 15 and represented in the graph, Fig. 4.
