The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is examined, including studies to listen for electromagnetic signals from other civilizations and to estimate the possible number of technological civilizations in the universe. The Green Bank equation is presented, discussing its use in estimating the civilizations capable of interplanetary communication based on variables such as the rate of star formation, the possible number of planets in the habitable zones of stars, and the number of planets in which life develops and evolves to levels of advanced technology. Estimates of the number of advanced civilizations are given, ranging from only one to one million. In addition, the possible length of a civilization's lifetime, the possibility that extraterrestrial societies might conceal their existence are discussed.
