Hourly monthly median values of foF2, measured at several European stations over the solar cycle were fitted to the linear regression model foF2 = aR + b, and the coefficients a and b were determined for constant cos chi values for each month in each station, to determine the sources of the seasonal and long-term diurnal variations of the foF2. The results show that the coefficient a is the most responsible factor for the winter-summer anomaly, while the coefficient b showed a diurnal anomaly. These anomalies appear to be related to corresponding variations of the the neutral-atmosphere composition at ionospheric heights.
