SAMBO-79 measurements of the ionospheric electric field were used to construct space-time distributions of this field for various substorm phases. This field tends to be less strong during nighttime in the explosive phase of a substorm than in the preliminary and recovery phases. The zonal component of the field has a westerly direction in the preliminary substorm phase in the region of the eastern electrojet. In addition to a western component, an eastern zonal component is found to occur during the recovery phase and sometimes during the explosive phase in the night and morning hours.
