It has been proposed that mode energy transfer may be the cause of the multiple pulsations observed in beat Cepheids. This raises the possibility that third and subsequent modes of pulsation may occur. In order to test this hypothesis, existing and newly acquired observations of AX Vel are Fourier analysed to search for a second overtone mode pulsation. No additional mode is found, indicating that mode energy transfer is unlikely to be the cause of the beat phenomenon.
