We describe a method of analysing wide-field maps from the Cambridge Low Frequency Synthesis Telescope (CLFST) to produce source catalogues. The CLFST is an earth-rotation synthesis instrument (operating at 151 and 38 MHz) whose baselines are offset from the E-W direction by about 3^deg^. Since the effective aperture is not coplanar, maps of sky-brightness distribution derived by a 2D Fourier transform from the observed visibilities show a synthesized beam which varies over the field of view and becomes increasingly distorted with increasing distance from the phase centre. We have overcome this problem by the use of beam-sets, or artificial maps consisting of grids of synthesized beams, which incorporate the effects of both the geometric and the chromatic aberration. By appropriate interpolation, we can find a good approximation to the beam- shape at any point on a map. The method enables us to analyse wide fields rapidly and accurately to produce catalogues of positions and flux densities of large numbers of sources. In particular, it has been used successfully in constructing the first part of the 7C survey of radio sources at 151 MHz. Since our approach does not depend on an analytic description of the beam, it may be applicable to other telescopes with other aperture.
