The HERMES experiment at DESY has performed a first measurement of the beam--charge asymmetry of the azimuthal φ distribution in hard electroproduction of photons from the proton. This asymmetry results from the interference between the Bethe-Heitler and the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) processes. The \cos φ moment of this asymmetry is sensitive to the real part of the DVCS helicity amplitude combination, which can be related to the generalized parton distribution functions. Details of the data analysis and results for the beam--charge asymmetry will be presented based on electron data taken in 1998 and positron data taken in 2000.
