High speed multicolor photometry and spectroscopy of BD Pav are presented. The object had been classified as a nova. A rediscussion of the eruption, however, suggests that BD Pav more likely is a dwarf nova with rare outbursts. Light curves in quiescence show a sharp eclipse feature, flickering activity, periodic W UMa like variations in B, V, R, and a typical U Gem hump light curve in U. The orbital period is 4.3 h, for which BD Pav is unusually red (G0-G5). Light and color variations of 0.5 and 0.1 mag, respectively, occur during the cycle. The spectra mainly show Balmer emission lines with complex profiles and occasionally He-emission. Radial velocity variations up to 600 km/s were found. The color and the different shapes of visual and ultraviolet light curves suggest a cataclysmic variable system with an exceptionally bright secondary as the main contributor to the visual luminosity. Due to the short orbital period a considerably evolved secondary may be assumed.
