The paper describes the results of an investigation conducted to determine whether the BCD classification system might be able to reveal differences in chemical composition between 'normal' stars. For about 40 stars selected for the study, the relationship between the intrinsic gradient Phib and spectral type was studied. B stars are closely aligned with a certain curve, while A and F stars lie in a scatter band around another curve. Along the curves, the stars have the average composition for the galactic disk, while stars above the curve are rich in metals. The MK system tends to classify metal-rich stars in a more advanced class than the BCD system, so that in principle it should be possible to distinguish overabundance even in reddened stars whose intrinsic gradient Phib is not known.
