The paper presents a short summary of basic instabilities in stellar
systems, namely: the Jeans, bar-mode and fire-hose (bending)
instabilities. A classification of bar-mode instabilities according to a
ratio of the bar pattern angular velocity and the maximal precession
speed of nearly-circular stellar orbits is proposed.
