Nuclear geophysics applies the nuclear radiation detection methodology to the geosciences, especially the dynamic processes of the lithosphere, the hydrosphere and the atmosphere as well as some aspects of planetology and astrophysics. The main methods described include: alpha and gamma ray spectrometry, the interaction of alpha and gamma radiation with matter and the detectors used (grid chambers, surface barrier silicon detector for alpha radiation; and sodium iodide thallium activated phosphors, hyperpure and lithium drifted germanium semiconductor detectors for gamma radiation). The principle applications of nuclear geophysics are given as examples to illustrate the use of the methods described.
