Barrier penetration coefficients, which take into account the exponential nature of the tail of the nuclear potential, are evaluated analytically for energies well below the Coulomb barrier. The formulas allow a simple discussion of theoretical uncertainties in the nonresonant part of astrophysical fusion cross sections arising from uncertainties in the tail of the potential, in particular the diffuseness. The systems p + N-13 and C-12 + C-12 are studied in detail. The derived expressions may also be useful in alpha decay.
