Thermodynamic calculations suggest that the total aqueous complexing of barium and sulfate and the presence of strontium in both aqueous and solid solution have a significant effect on the saturation relations of barite in sea water. Ocean waters in which pure BaSO 4 appears to dissolve may actually be saturated with respect to (Ba, Sr)SO 4 of intermediate composition.
