Using a low-pressure hollow cathode discharge cooled by liquid nitrogen, we have obtained the bands of the second negative system A-X of 16O+2 and 1802+ in emission between 4800 and 2600 Å. Photographed with high-resolution spectrograph, the complex band structure was available for analysis.
The vibrational analysis of the band heads of 18+2 was found to be consistent with the expected isotope shift. The rotational analysis yields preliminary values of molecular constants and of band origins. The final values are obtained by the least-squares fitting technique of Zare et al. Rotational analysis has been carried out on (3-4), (2-5), (2-6), and (1-12) bands of 16O+2 and on (1-8), (0-6), and (2-6) bands of 18O+2 molecule. Molecular constants for lower X2IIg and upper A2IIu electronic states are reported.
