Scientific paper

The paper investigates the nonlinear transfer of radiation in the hydrogen lines in a medium illuminated by high-energy radiation. An analytical solution to the steady-state problem is obtained for the case where the illumination is so great that the optical thickness in the hydrogen lines is less than unity. Emission and absorption decrements are calculated numerically for the Lyman, Balmer, Paschen, and Brackett series. An algorithm is proposed for the solution of the more general unsteady-state problem.
