Two phoswich detector systems with 125 cm sq and 800 cm sq geometric areas for use in hard X-ray astronomy were developed and flown on balloons in 1976 and 1977, respectively. The detectors and the orientation system are described and the results on detector background and performance data are presented for five balloon flights. An observation of the binary source AM Her in the energy range from 15 to 100 KeV resulted in an energy spectrum which is in good agreement with measurements from OSO-8 at lower energies assuming an exponential spectrum, but far below the flux observed by ARIEL-5.
