Electric-field-induced collisional activation (ECA) measurements of stratospheric ions are reported. The measurements were carried out using an ion-mass spectrometer on board a balloon at an altitude of 30.5 km. Ion clusters containing aetonitrile (CH3CN) were detected as well as H2O ions, the most common component of stratospheric ions. The airborne ECA measurements were in agreement with the results of laboratory ECA studies of protonated H(+)CH3CN. It is concluded that in addition to water, CH3CN is the most prominent ligand in stratospheric positive ions.
