Using the solution of the equations of a chemically nonequilibrium boundary layer in the wake behind a body moving with hypersonic velocity in nitrogen and the results of measurements of integral quantities associated with the electron-density distribution the authors have obtained the following: the ambipolar Schmidt number; the constants determining the temperature distribution along the axis of the wake; the initial diameter of the wake; and, the rate kr of the recombination reaction N2++e. The distribution of the gas-dynamic quantities in the wake are calculated, on the basis of the quantities found, for other conditions, and good agreement is obtained with respect to the entire set of various parameters measured in a ballistic experiment. The results of this work show that the present experimental procedure can be used to determine the rate constants of nonequilibrium reactions in the wakes behind meteor bodies.
