We will present our theoretical modeling and numerical simulations of the accretion streams in magnetic and non-magnetic cataclysmic variables, especially concentrating on the ballistic portion of the stream. In an attempt to quantify the observational properties commonly ascribed to changes in the mass transfer rate, we are exploring the time evolution of the geometry and density structure of the accretion stream caused by short-term variations in the mass transfer rate. The theoretical models we are using in our numerical simulations are three dimensional and include the effects of both the gravitational and magnetic forces over the entire stream trajectory, allowing a detailed analysis of the coupling region in magnetic systems.
