-The Martha's Vineyard tektite is an enigmatic specimen that is unique in two ways. It is the only specimen from the island of Martha's Vineyard, and it contains an inclusion of baddeleyite, monoclinic ZrO 2 . Baddeleyite defects are well known in artificial glass and have recently been observed in impactite. This is its first occurrence in a tektite. The baddeleyite inclusion was identified by the use of reflected light microscopy, electron microscopy, and electron microprobe studies. This data is sufficient to establish the identification, even though it was not possible to study the inclusion in thin-section or to obtain an X-ray diffraction pattern. The morphology of the inclusion is discussed and shown to be different than that for baddeleyite inclusions reported in impactite. The presence of baddeleyite in the Martha's Vineyard tektite suggests another similarity between tektites and impactites.
