Ccd Photometry: Data Processing

Scientific paper

Unsharp masking is of classical use in astronomy for the general purpose of enhancing contrasts. Roudier et al. describe a numerical passband filter which was used in the case of solar granulation studies as well as for measuring clumps in irregular galaxies. The authors' purpose is to test this technique in the case of stellar photometry in crowded fields such as the core of concentrated globular clusters. They propose to enhance the star signal with respect to background by filtering the low spatial frequencies in such a way that the background contribution becomes small and useful relative aperture photometry can be carried out.
