The peak intensities of solar energetic (E > 10 MeV) particle events observed at 1 AU have been shown to increase steeply as a function of the speeds of the associated CMEs. I compare the number distributions of CME speeds and the SEP intensity distributions as a function of CME speeds to understand the number distribution of SEP event intensities. Some of the spread in the correlation of the SEP intensities and the CME speeds may be due to ambient energetic seed populations present before the occurrence of some fast CMEs. I look for the importance of this factor in the spread of SEP intensities using SEP events observed over two solar cycles.
