Scientific paper

The modern era of interstellar communication began with the seminal paper of Cocconi and Morrison (1959), the Project Ozma search of Drake (1960), and the first conference on the subject, held at Green Bank, West Virginia in 1961. These events and those that followed, however, were paralleled by an earlier era of interest in interplanetary communication, which in some ways foreshadowed the questions of the later era. In this paper we discuss the era of interplanetary communication, concentrating primarily on ideas about radio communication, from Tesla and Marconi through the 1930s, when Mars was no longer considered inhabited and radio waves were discovered emanating naturally from outer space, precipitating the birth of radio astronomy. Aside from its historical interest, this earlier era may also hold instructive value for present SETI. In addition, the interplanetary communication era provides little-known background to the history of radio astronomy.
